Purpose

To create a comprehensive handbook about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome with a focus on the true nature of its physical manifestations.

Additionally a website was created to be able to access the book as an online flipbook and downloadable PDF.

About the Project

Polycystic Ovary (or Ovarian) Syndrome affects upwards of 10% of the female population and is the leading cause of infertility in females. Despite this, the research and availability of information is limited. Additionally, it is a condition with shame associated with it due to its physical manifestations.

The goal of this project was to explore ways in which resources and new medical visualisations can contribute to dismantling the body appearance biases and shame. Symptoms such as hirsutism (excess hair growth), weight gain, skin discoloration, metabolic disorders, susceptibility to cancers, and fertility issues push those with PCOS beyond society's perception of "normal," "feminine," or "beautiful." The resulting stigma is sometimes reinforced by the cartoonish figures and symbols used in current resources to depict the disease. This project takes a different approach by utilising medium realistic depictions of symptoms that not only accurately represent the phenology of PCOS but also acknowledge the intersectionality of individuals with PCOS.

A physical handbook was created as well as a website with the book in digital form available for download and to view online as a flipbook.
